The sixth of twelve children of IU’s first President Andrew Wylie, John Hosea Wylie graduated from IU at age eighteen. Four years later, he obtained his M.D. from the University of Louisville and established a medical practice. Wylie contracted tuberculosis; he chose to leave his work and family in Richmond, Indiana, and travel, spending time in California and on his own in the Washington and Oregon Territories. He went to Hawaii, where he died at a sugar plantation (now the city of Lihue) on the island of Kauai.
Wylie was the brother of Andrew Wylie, Jr., Craig Ritchie Wylie, and Samuel Theophylact Wylie.
Wylie married Lizzie Leeds in 1851; they had one child, Irene.
