The eldest of twelve children, Andrew Wylie, Jr., was the son of IU’s first President Andrew Wylie. Wylie, Jr., attended Indiana College (now IU) as did five of his brothers: Anderson, Craig, John, Samuel, and William. Wylie, Jr., graduated from IU in 1832 at age eighteen. His younger brother, William, died in 1835 while still a senior, but his other four siblings graduated. Wylie, Jr., practiced law in Pittsburgh and served on the Pittsburgh City Council. One year, he was city attorney. Wylie, Jr.’s father died in 1851, in the Wylie House (which is preserved today as a museum), having been president of Indiana University (in its various names) for over twenty years. His mother died in 1859. In 1863, Wylie, Jr., was appointed associate justice of the U. S. District of Columbia Court by Abraham Lincoln; he held that position from 1864 to 1885. Wylie, Jr., was the brother of Craig Ritchie Wylie, John Hosea Wylie, and Samuel Theophylact Wylie. Wiley, Jr., lived to age ninety-one and was buried in Washington, DC, in 1905.
In 1845, Wylie, Jr., married Mary Caroline Bryan. They had son and namesake, Andrew III, in 1847. He died in 1858 at age eleven. In 1868, Wylie, Jr., (age fifty-four) and his wife (age forty-three) had a second son, Horace. In 1870, they had a third son, Andrew, (as their first was named). This son died at age sixteen months. Only Horace lived to adulthood. Mary Caroline died in 1896.
