The third son of twelve children born to IU’s first President Andrew Wylie, Craig Ritchie Wylie was named after his maternal grandfather, who emigrated from Scotland in 1772 and was friend and frequent host of George Washington. Wylie graduated from IU in 1838 at age nineteen and intended to study law. He taught briefly in Kentucky before dying at age twenty-one of congestive fever. Wylie was the brother of Andrew Wylie, Jr., John Hosea Wylie, and Samuel Theophylact Wylie.
