Nathaniel Timothy Hauser was educated in the common schools of Stokes County and at the Moravian Academy in Salem, North Carolina. He was a member of the Moravian church. At age twelve, his family moved to Indiana. After graduating from IU, he practiced law and also farmed. From 1856 to 1860, he was judge of common pleas in Bartholomew County. A pro-war Democrat, he participated in the Civil War’s only major military campaign on Indiana soil, the Morgan Raid. He served as a private in the Union company organized to oppose the raid. In July 1864, he moved from Bartholomew County, Indiana, to Minnesota, where he lived until his death in 1905. He was a judge in Minneapolis from at least 1878 to 1888.
In 1848, Hauser married Eveline Barton in Columbus, Indiana. Together they had seven children. He was the younger brother of George Abraham Hauser.
His great-granddaughter, Beverly Lou Hauser, and her husband, Bud Kuhrt, co-founded the city of Borrego Springs, California.
