Isaac Benjamin Gwathmey was educated at Thomas Elliott’s school in Kentucky and also at Bacon College (now University of Kentucky). He graduated from IU with his bachelor’s degree at age nineteen. Three years later, he was the commencement speaker for that year’s IU Commencement. He moved to Saint Louis, Missouri, and practiced law there. He was just beginning to establish himself and be regarded as one of the leading men inMissouri law when he died.
Gwathmey did not marry or have any children. He was the elder brother of Richard Clough Gwathmey.
Gwathmey was awarded posthumously a Bachelor of Laws degree from Harvard Law School.
