Alexander Yates was born and raised in Mississippi, then went north for his education. He completed three different degrees: a bachelors (1850) from IU, an LL.B. from Harvard University (1852), and an M.D. from New Orleans Medical College (1856). He was a practicing physician before the Civil War. Yates enlisted in the Civil War in 1862, rising from first lieutenant to captain to major. He was severely wounded in Iuka, Mississippi; his brigade commander commended him for behaving “heroically and nobly.” He took two months to recuperate, then returned to his regiment. Yates was killed in the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863.
