Born in Illinois, son of Rev. Samuel Wylie who emigrated from Ireland, William Theodore Wylie graduated from IU in 1848. He was a pastor of three churches in Pennsylvania: Milton, Newcastle, and Bellefonte. He was an ardent advocate of temperance. He was president of Wilson College for Women in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was originator and publisher of The Christian Giver monthly magazine.
William had two sons and a daughter, Laura, who became a Professor of English at Vassar.
William was the first cousin, once removed, of IU’s first president Andrew Reddick Wylie.
