Simeon Kalfius Wolfe was born the second of four children in 1824, in Floyd County, Indiana, near what is now Georgetown. His brother, Harvey, was born in 1832, when his mother was forty-three years old. His mother died when Wolfe was eighteen. The next year, his father married Mehitable Mitchell, a widow who already had a daughter and two sons of her own. In 1848, Wolfe’s brother, David, and sister, Lydia, both died.
Wolfe obtained his law degree from IU in 1850. From 1857 to 1865, he edited the Corydon Democrat newspaper.
In 1867, Wolfe’s surviving full sibling, Harvey, married Anna Bence, his wife’s younger sister. They were now both brothers and brothers-in-law. Harvey and Anna had three children; two died as infants and the third died at age fifteen. In 1872, Wolfe’s father died. From 1873 to 1875, Wolfe was a representative and from 1880 to 1884, he was judge of the Floyd and Clark Counties’ circuit court. Wolfe died in 1888 in New Albany. His younger brother, Harvey, was a physician and lived to 1922.
Wolfe married Penelope Bence, who was slightly older than him. They had son Albert in 1845, daughter Ada in 1847, son Robert in 1857, daughter Ella in 1860, and son Edward in 1863. In 1849, his wife’s father died. In 1875, daughter Ada died at age twenty-seven. In 1882, eldest son Albert died.
