Indiana born, William Cochran Wilson graduated from Wabash College in 1847. He earned his law degree from IU in 1849, and was admitted to the Indiana bar that same year. In April 1861, less than a week after Fort Sumter’s attack and surrender, Wilson enlisted in the Union Infantry, rising to the rank of colonel. He was wounded at the Battle of Rich Mountain. In his long practice as a defense lawyer, of his thirty-two capital cases, not a single client of his was ever executed. He received a pension as an invalid Civil War veteran for wounds received in service to his country. Wilson died in 1891.
