A lawyer involved with the Underground Railroad, Gustavus Henry Voss was born in Ohio in 1822, the eldest of ten children. His youngest brother, William, was born in 1841 and died of lung fever in 1879. In April 1848, his younger brother, George, died at age fourteen. Voss earned his law degree from IU in 1848 and was a district attorney for some time. Voss died in March 1883.
Voss married Sarah Ann Evans on March 15, 1845. They had five daughters and one son together. Voss’s mother died in October 1878. His wife died in 1880. In January 1882, his daughter, Corinna, married “I.S.” Randolph, a real estate dealer with homes in both Texas and Indianapolis, at age thirty-one. In August 1882, Voss married Mary Winship, a widow whose own son and daughter had died in childhood. Voss’s father died in 1884.
