Born in London, England, in 1817, Henry Tanner graduated from IU in 1842 with his bachelor's degree. The following year, he was tapped to take charge of the mathematical department of IU. At the close of his term as head of the math department, the IU Board of Trustees expressed, as Wylie wrote, “their entire satisfaction with the creditable manner in which he had filled so responsible a position.” Afterwards, he continued as a student to complete his IU law degree in 1846. He moved to Paris, Illinois, where he became a state attorney and later a judge, which he remained for the rest of his life. A staunch supporter of the Catholic Church, he died in 1895, having been one of the oldest members of the Illinois bar.
Tanner’s wife died in 1885 of tuberculosis.
