Albert Robinson Shannon
Life Experience
Albert Robinson Shannon was born an only child in Kentucky. He lived in Carmi, Illinois, before graduating from IU at age nineteen. He was also educated at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. He received his Doctor of Laws degree from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky in 1844. His father died the same year. He worked as a merchant. He died in 1887 (two days after Christmas).
Marriage and Family
In 1845, Shannon married Sarah Jane Ready. They had a son, Samuel (in 1849), and a daughter, Emma (in 1853). Emma died in 1855. They had another daughter, Mary (in 1857), and another son, William (in 1859). In January 1861, Sarah Jane died followed by William thirteen days later. In 1876, Samuel died at age twenty-six. Mary, the surviving daughter, married in 1884 and had her first child in April 1887. Mary’s husband went on to become a U.S. Congressman and retire with his family to California. Shannon has living descendants today.
