Robert Quincy Roache was born in west Tennessee. He was one of nine children. Three of his brothers (James, Andrew, and Stephen) died young and were buried in Tennessee. Three of his sisters (Elmira Jane, Latina, and Margaret) all died in their infancy and were buried in Indiana. He had two siblings that survived to adulthood, Addison and Howard. At age five, Roache moved with his family to Indiana. He graduated from IU in 1845. After graduation, he worked in commercial business and banking. He resided in the city of California in Moniteau County, Missouri, where he was president of the Moniteau Bank. He served one term as judge of the circuit court.
Roache married Rebecca Page Sunderland in 1845, but they had no children. They, however, raised his wife’s two nieces, Carrie and Emma. They also took in his mother, Elmira, who died in 1890. He and Rebecca were married for fifty-six years. Roache died in 1908.
Roache’s cousin, Katie Fox, wrote, “The Tennessee relatives looked on the Roaches as their wealthier kin. Once Cousin Quincy brought all the West Tennessee male relatives a pocket [New] Testament and the females a silver thimble.”
