Joshua J. Presler was born the eldest of three children in Concordia, Louisiana, in 1815. He was named after his father, who had migrated from North Carolina. His father was a planter, who had acquired a large plantation located in Wilkinson County, in the Mississippi Territory, right before it became a state.
At age fifteen or sixteen, Presler traveled from Mississippi to Ohio to attend Miami University Grammar School, where he completed his education in 1834. He then attended Indiana College (now IU), where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1838. He returned to Mississippi after graduation and lived in Woodville. He worked on his father’s farm until at least 1850. Before the Civil War, he lived in Concordia, Louisiana, and then Pointe Coupee, Louisiana.
