George Gill Porter was born in South Carolina before his family moved to Kentucky. He was the ninth of eleven children, the elder brother of Josiah Porter. He was educated in Paris, Kentucky, and Center College, Kentucky. He graduated from Indiana College (now IU) in 1832. After studying theology, he was licensed to preach in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on October 3, 1835, and was also ordained by the Crawfordsville Presbytery in Waveland, Indiana, on April 3, 1838. His brother Josiah was licensed and ordained at the same time and place. Porter preached the Gospel and taught school.
Porter married Mary Knox Rutherford in Tennessee.
