Life Experience
George Holibird Munson was born in Connecticut, but he and his elder brother moved to Bedford, Indiana with his widowed father. Munson was educated at the Salem Academy. He graduated from IU at age seventeen with his bachelor’s degree and went on to earn his law degree from IU. He was an attorney-at-law in partnership with George G. Dunn. Theophilus Wylie (Presbyterian minister, college professor, and cousin of IU’s first president, Andrew Wiley) wrote that Munson “was a daily reader of the Bible and was always ready to help the needy.”
Marriage and Family
When Munson was a year old and his elder brother was three, their mother gave birth to a daughter, Julia. Two months later, his mother died, followed a month after that by Julia. Munson’s father remarried and had another child in 1844. His maternal grandmother died in 1849, his maternal grandfather in 1850, and his mother’s brother, William Holabird (who had been lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut), in early 1855, all in Connecticut. Munson died in 1855 in Bedford, but he was buried with his mother’s family in Connecticut.
