John Wilson Morrison was born in South Carolina and moved to Indiana. He graduated from IU in 1838. His lifelong occupation was as a preacher of the Gospel. Beginning in May 1845, he was the first pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Bloom, Illinois, and he held that position for twenty years. During much of that time, two known stops in the Underground Railroad were at the homes of two families in his church. After the end of the Civil War, he resigned his pastorate to work with the newly emancipated freedmen (former slaves). His tombstone has on it this inscription: “A Prairie Missionary. An Eloquent Preacher. Faithful Pastor. The Lord is My Belief. Faith My Son.”
Morrison married Martha McEldowney. They had six children together.
