John Alexander Millen was born in South Carolina and came with his family to Indiana at age seven. He resided in Bedford, Indiana. He was educated in the common schools of Monroe County, Indiana. He graduated from IU with his bachelor’s degree at age nineteen. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. During his short life, he was a teacher in Louisiana for a brief time, and then he practiced law in Bedford, Indiana. At the time of his death, he was age twenty-three.
Millen’s cousin, William Moffat Millen, built the Raintree House in Bloomington in 1850. It still stands today as a National Historic Site.
