Hugh Aiken McKelvey was born in South Carolina, but he was educated in Sparta, Illinois. He graduated from IU in 1843 and taught at Princeton Seminary from 1847 to 1848. He worked as a teacher and a preacher. He was a pastor for seven years, during which time he also edited The Randolph County Journal of Sparta, Illinois. He was then a missionary in Minnesota for four years. In 1864, he was appointed superintendent of the Freedman’s Schools (former slaves) of Natchez, Mississippi, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He died while in New York City in 1892 and was buried in Connecticut.
On August 28, 1866, McKelvey married Dotha Ann Hotchkiss of Connecticut. At the time, he was thirteen years her senior. They had four children together; the youngest was born when he was age sixty, and Dotha was age forty-seven. They resided in Bridgeport, Connecticut in the 1880s. All four of their children lived to at least 1944.
