Alexander McClelland was born in Ireland on the first day of the nineteenth century. He was educated in Ireland, but he emigrated to the U.S. He lived in Spencer, Indiana, and graduated from IU in 1846. Immediately after graduation, he served in the commissary department during the Mexican War. He worked as a merchant and a bookkeeper. He returned to Bloomington, where he was an attorney. He served the Democratic Party at various conventions as a candidate and a county delegate. However, he was never actually elected to public office. He died in Bloomington in 1876.
