George L. McAfee resided in the town of Long Grove in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was educated in the Mercer County (Kentucky) common schools. He came to Bloomington to attend Indiana College (now IU) and graduated in 1837. He received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Louisville Medical Institute in 1845. Throughout his life, he worked as a physician, legislator, and farmer. He was a practicing physician for thirty-five years. In 1866, he was elected to the Kentucky State Legislature from Hardin County without opposition. In the House, on the occasion of the death of Governor Helm, he delivered a eulogy that was highly spoken of by Senator Jesse D. Bright and others. In the last years of his life, McAfee was an agriculturist. He died in Hardin County, Kentucky, two days before Christmas, 1883.
McAfee married Susan Richards. They had four children together.
