Samuel Franklin Maxwell was educated in the Bloomington schools. He practiced law. He was judge of the court of common pleas for Parke and Vermillion Counties from 1853 to 1861 and for Parke, Sullivan, and Vigo Counties from 1865 to 1869. Maxwell died from tetanus, arising from a wound in his hand, in 1877.
Maxwell and his wife, Eliza, had two daughters, Maimie and Julia. Julia’s daughter, Fra Dana, became a well-known painter of Western and Native American themes.
Maxwell was the younger brother of James Darwin Maxwell and elder brother of David Howard Maxwell.
