Samuel Newell Depew Martin was educated at a private school in Livonia, Indiana, and also in Paris, Illinois. He graduated from IU in 1846.
Martin was a missionary in Ningpo (now Ningbo), China, for the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions from 1850 to 1858. He was a home missionary for six years in Texas and for eight years in Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. He served as superintendent of a government boarding school for boys among the Nez-Percé Indians at an Indian reservation in the Idaho Territory for two years. He was a missionary in Kansas for four years. In his sixties, he was a live-in superintendent at the Government Industrial Boarding School for the Winnebago Indians in Winnebago Agency, Nebraska. This is also where he and his wife were missionaries. Martin died and was buried in the town of Goldendale, Klickitat County, Washington.
Martin was the elder brother of William Alexander Parsons Martin. Samuel, William, and one sister were missionaries in China and Africa. Samuel, William, and one brother became ministers, and five of their seven sisters married Presbyterian ministers.
