Ara Edward Spence Long resided in Columbus, Indiana. He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from North Western Christian University (now Butler University).
Long held numerous jobs throughout his life, including a teacher, farmer, merchant, assistant treasurer, postmaster, and lawyer. He was nominated as a Republican candidate and a National Party candidate for the state legislature, but was defeated both times. He was postmaster in Columbus for four years under President Franklin Pierce. He died in 1907 and was buried in Bellingham, Washington.
Long married wife, Elizabeth, in 1861. They had one daughter, also named Elizabeth, who graduated from IU in 1883 and then from the Indiana Normal School of Terre Haute (now Indiana State University) in 1890. Daughter Elizabeth died of typhoid fever in Terre Haute in 1904. She died without having children.
