William Caruthers Hillis
Life Experience
William Caruthers Hillis was educated in Madison, Indiana, prior to attending IU, where he graduated in 1838, at age seventeen. An attorney, he was a representative in the Indiana State Legislature for several sessions. He was also county treasurer of Jefferson County, Indiana. After leaving Indiana, he served as prosecuting attorney of the 4th Circuit Court in Missouri for eight years before holding a four-year appointment as judge of the criminal court in Des Moines, Iowa. He died and was buried at Santa Barbara, California.
Marriage and Family
In 1843, Hillis married Eliza Lea; they had eight children together.
