John Abraham Hendricks was the son of William Hendricks, Indiana’s third governor (1822-1825).He was educated at the common and classical schools of Madison, Indiana. After graduating from IU in 1843, he worked in the lumber business and then in the window sash business before practicing law. He saw military action first in the Mexican War as captain of the 16th Regiment of Infantry. During the Civil War, he was lieutenant colonel of the 22nd Indiana Volunteers. He was killed at the Battle of Pea Ridge on March 7, 1862, his twenty-ninth birthday.
