Robert Charles Foster was educated in the Philadelphia public schools. He moved to Bloomington, Indiana, at age thirteen and resided there for the next fifty-five years. He graduated from IU with his bachelor’s degree at age nineteen. He was a member and treasurer of the Presbyterian church in Bloomington. He was a cashier at the Bloomington First National Bank and a county auditor and clerk of the circuit court of Monroe County. He was the state representative for Monroe County in the Indiana Legislature in 1877. He was an IU Trustee, serving as secretary to the Board for nearly twenty-five years.
