Andrew Henderson Evans was born on Christmas Day in 1818. He entered the newly established Indiana College (now IU) from Spencer, Indiana, at age twelve. He was listed in the first college catalogue of the university in 1831. He left the university without any record of having graduated. He was still in Spencer in 1841 (serving on the Indiana State Board of Revenue), but he moved soon after to Delphi, Indiana. He eventually returned to IU to obtain his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1848. He made his living as an attorney.
During the Civil War, Evans enlisted in the Union Army at age forty-two. He became second lieutenant of Company K, 2nd Regiment Indiana Cavalry. He resided in Terre Haute in 1867 and in Indianapolis in 1870. In 1873, he was an attorney for the International Merchants’ Protective Law Association. He was still listed as being in Indianapolis in 1885 but he died eight years later in Kansas in 1893.
In 1840, Evans married Nancy Owen.
