John Willis Dunbar was born eleventh of twelve children. His father died when he was just eight years old. He was educated at Jefferson College in Washington, Mississippi, and tutored by celebrated orator S. S. Prentiss. After graduating from IU, he studied law, intending to prepare himself for political life, but died at age twenty-seven due to failing health. While at IU, he was popular and admired by his fellow students, so much so that they published an address he delivered while there.
Dunbar married but had no children. However, his siblings have numerous living descendants.
