John Darrock was educated at the Parke County Seminary. He studied law in the office of Howard & Wright in Rockville for two years before attending IU and receiving his Bachelor of Laws. He then practiced law in Parke County for two years. He was appointed Swamp Land Commissioner of Jasper County and held that office for eighteen months. He spent the rest of his life farming.
He married Caroline, daughter of Austin M. Puett of Parke County, in 1844. She died in 1853. He then married Cecelia M., daughter of Benjamin Henkle, in 1855. He fathered nineteen children: five sons and one daughter by his first wife, and six sons and seven daughters by his second wife. Cecelia died in 1878.
