John Dale was educated in Oxford, Ohio. Helater became a minister of the Gospel. He primarily ministered in the towns of Knightstown, Kokomo, and Tipton in Indiana; Pleasant Hill in Virginia; and Fairbury and Providence in Illinois. In 1848, he helped organize the women-only Knightstown Academy. He also organized a Presbyterian church in the town of Virginia in Illinois, serving as its pastor until 1862 when, at age fifty, he entered the Union Army. During the Civil War, he was chaplain of the 75th Indiana Volunteers, who participated in the battles of Chattanooga and Mission Ridge, Tennessee.
In 1864, Dale and his wife had their seventh child, born twenty-five years after their first child. Dale died in December of 1871. His wife, Nancy, died three days later.
