George W. Cornelius grew up in Wayne County, Indiana. He graduated from IU with a Bachelor of Laws degree at age 19. He served as a Union private from 1864 to 1865, and became an agriculturalist after the war.
Cornelius married in 1855. He and his wife had no children. His older brother, William, died in 1863. His wife died in 1899, and Cornelius in 1905.
From at least 1853 to 1861, Cornelius was a train-traveling photographer, having “the only instrument of the kind this side of Cincinnati.” A meteorite fell on his Kentucky farm in 1873, and years later, he helped scientists dig it up and take it to a museum.
