Orlando Clarke was educated at Hanover College in Indiana. After graduating from IU, he studied theology for three years at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey, where he was licensed to preach. He continued his study of theology at New Haven Theological Seminary. He was stated supply (a term for traveling ministers of the Gospel) in various congregations in Iowa, Ohio, and Missouri. He was a chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War. From 1862 to 1864, he was superintendent of the Blind Asylum of Iowa City. He was ordained as a minister of the Congregational Church in Saint Louis in 1865. In 1875 and 1876, he was superintendent of the Blind Asylum in Vinton, Iowa, where he died after a short illness.
Theophilus Wylie (Presbyterian minister, college professor, and cousin of IU’s first president, Andrew Wylie) wrote, Clarke “was in his attainments, scholarly; in his sentiments, elevated; and in his care and government of the pupils, wise, tender, and loving.”
