Jonathan Clark was educated in Louisville, Kentucky, at the schools of R. M. Smith, John Harney, and Noble Butler. He graduated from IU with his bachelor’s degree at age eighteen. He earned his M.D. from Louisville University. He was a practicing physician.
At age forty-six, Clark married Emma Calhoun Noble. Their first child, a daughter, died by age four. Their following two children, however, lived into the 20th century. Clark resided in Paducah, where some of his descendants still live today.
Clark was said to have been a relative of William Clark, the explorer who first laid out the town of Paducah, Kentucky, in 1827.
