John Oldham Bullock was the only child of his mother, Sophia. She died shortly after his birth. His father, William (a judge, law professor, and state legislator), married nineteen-year-old Mary Pearce, granddaughter of General Jonathan Clark (war hero and brother of George Rogers Clark).
Bullock graduated from IU in 1847 at age seventeen. He was an attorney-at-law. He briefly retired from the bar to take charge of the Louisville Times newspaper. As a political writer, he was distinguished for his ability. In Columbus, Kentucky, where he returned to practicing law, he acquired a high position at the bar, and was regarded as one of the most promising men in that section of the state. Bullock died at age twenty-eight.
Bullock married Laurane Tanner of Wheeling, West Virginia. They had two sons. After Bullock’s death, Laurane moved with her surviving son back to the northern part of Virginia, which became West Virginia during the Civil War. Laurane attracted the attention of Arthur Boreman, first Governor of West Virginia. They were married in 1864, making her West Virginia’s first “First Lady” of the state. She had two more children with Boreman. She lived to 1908.
