Thomas H. Bruner was born in Indiana in 1828 to Abraham and Elizabeth Bruner. His grandfather founded the town of Jeffersontown, Kentucky (originally known as Brunnerstown), and was one of the first settlers of Patoka, Indiana. Bruner was admitted to the bar in Evansville, Indiana in 1850. He moved to Illinois sometime before 1862. Later he moved to Kingston in Labette County, Kansas. He was at various times an attorney, a school master of an in-house school, a postmaster, and a drug store owner. He was also a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church. He later moved to Temple, Texas. He came to Temple in its infancy, purchased a valuable farm outside the corporate limits, and erected an imposing brick structure. He became an optician and was well known over a large scope of country.
Bruner married Ann Elizabeth Turner. They had seven children over a span of twenty years. Bruner’s nephew, Donn Roberts, was mayor of Terre Haute from 1913 to 1915.
