Francis Patrick Bradley was an attorney-at-law, who practiced in Washington, Indiana. He was a volunteer in the army during the Mexican War and assisted in raising a company of volunteers who served in the regiment of Colonel J. H. Lane. Bradley also served on the staff of Colonel Lane during the war.
From the August 26, 1847 edition of the Indiana State Sentinel, a newspaper founded in 1841 and based in Indianapolis: “Mr. F. P. Bradley, wishes to raise a company of Dragoons in Daviess County, in this State, to serve during the war, and desires to know if said company would be accepted. If so, through what medium they would be furnished with the means of reaching the seat of war, and (furnishing their own horses) what would be the pay of the various officers and of the privates and the compensation for the horses. [His request was denied by the Secretary of War, W. M. Marcy, saying, ‘I have to state that the exigencies of the war are not deemed to require at present the additional force offered from your State.’]”
For several years, Bradley was a clerk in the land office of the Trustees of the Wabash and Erie Canal. He was also a contractor on public works.
