Samuel Alexander was educated in the common schools of Fleming County, Kentucky. He studied medicine at the Physiopathic Medical College of Ohio, where he received the degree Doctor of Medicine. He was a practicing physician.
Alexander was for many years an elder in the Presbyterian Church. He was also a school trustee for forty years, a Sabbath-school teacher, and a prohibitionist. He was one of several speakers at the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the Presbyterian Church in Indiana.
