Jesse Ianthus Alexander was born in 1824 in Gosport, Indiana, the sixth of eight children of Abner and Mary Alexander. He graduated from IU in 1845. During the Mexican War, he served as a captain in Company B of the 4th Indiana Infantry. He also served in the Indiana Senate from 1850 to 1852 and again in 1855 and 1857.
Alexander enlisted in the Union Army on October 10, 1861. In February 1862, the regiment of the 59th Indiana Infantry was mustered with Alexander as colonel. He and his regiment played a significant part in the siege of Vicksburg in 1863, serving under Ulysses S. Grant, until its surrender on July 4. He continued leading the infantry through August 1864, after which he returned to Gosport and picked up his law practice. Some years later, he moved to Terre Haute.
In November 1861, Alexander’s son, Schuyler Hamilton Alexander, was born.He was named after a military friend, who was the grandson of Alexander Hamilton. Schuyler married and had one daughter. They moved to Los Angeles, California.
